About Edmund Hugo Brandts Immigrated to US Nov. 18 1903 (age 24) from Lodz Germany, which was an industrial city. He returned to Germany in July 1907 after he married Lillie Hirsch. Edmund was a businessman, having started several businesses in the US. He was in furniture manufacturing at the Mersman Brothers Brandts Furniture company, he owned property on Grand Lake which included a hotel/restaurant, and quite a few cottages for summer vacationers. After the depression of the 1930s, he committed suicide because of the financial downfall of the businesses. ... 1903 November 18, 1903 Age 24 Immigrated to US Edmond arrived in the US on the ship Grosser Kurfurst from the port of Bremen in Germay. His last place of residence in germany was listed as Lotz, a smaller manufacturing city. 1905 1905 Age 25 Marriage of Edmund and Lillie Brandts 1905 Age 25 Formed Realty Company Celina, OH, USA About 1905, Mr. Edmund Brandts, who was associated with the Mersman-Brandts organization; Mr. George Booze; and I formed the Celina Realty Company. This company was incorporated for the purpose of building homes which were very scarce in Celina. From Mr. David Overly, we purchased a piece of land on what is now North Sugar Street. We divided and platted this property into town lots, graded it, and built sidewalks. The new addition was entered in the county records. I contracted with the company to build six houses, all of the less-expensive type. Before completion, all of these were sold. The following year, we bought another piece of land from Mr. Overly on what is now North Mill Street. This property was divided into lots and called Fairview. Again I arranged with the Celina Realty Company to construct six houses. All of these were readily sold. At this time, Mr. J. E. Hamburger, owner of the former Mercer County Fair Grounds, offered to sell this property to the company on condition that he would become a partner in our organization. W~ agreed to the proposition and once more I contracted with the company to build several cottages on these premises. Since this time, all these homes have either been removed or remodeled. I then contracted with the company to build what is now the Mercelina Hotel for six thousand dollars. My contract did not include the wiring, heating, or plumbing, all of which were handled by Mr. Brandts. Our next project was the organization of the Celina Chattaqua, in which we soon interested Mr. J. D. Johnson, Mr. Ira Crampton, Mr. P. E. Kenney, and others. The Chattaqua was operated for about four years, during which time we attracted such noted orators as Maude Ballington Booth, William Jennings Bryan, and Billy Sunday. Eventually the organization seemed to lose interest in the project and it was abandoned. During these Chatauqua sessions I had moved my family into a tent on the fair grounds and had later built two cottages, one for Mr. Brandts and one for my family. These cottages are still standing in their original location. About 1912, Mr. Brandts suggested that the Celina Realty Company be dissolved. He, being particularly anxious to acquire the former fair grounds, was given that property in the dissolution. I obtained twenty lots in the Citizens Addition in Celina and all of the Brandts Addition which we had formerly purchased. Before the dissolution, I had built six houses on what is now Godfrey Avenue and ten in the Citizens Addition. These homes and the remaining empty lots were easily sold. 1906 1906 Age 26 Mersman Brothers & Brandts Company Celina, OH, USA Mersman Furniture of Ottoville, Ohio, was founded around 1876 by J B Mersman, a former sawmill operator. The business was relocated to Celina in 1900 and manufactured beds, dining tables, and library tables. Soon after the move to Celina, the company's operation was turned ober to Mersman's sons, Edward, walter, and Albert, and a local banker and investor, Henry Lenartz and the firm became known as Lenartz and Mersman Brothers. Lenartz later sold his interest in the company to the brothers and Edmond Brandts, a Prussian-German immigrant, and again the name of the company was changed. Mersman Brothers and Brandts company was incorporated in 1906 and the business, employing 125 workers and ten traveling salesmen was now shipping high quality furniture to all pars of the US and to Canada. The company changed its name in 1927 to Mersman Brothers Corporation, assuming that edmund no longer had interest in this company. 1907 July 6, 1907 Age 28 Return trip to Germany Edmund went back to Germany in 1907, and on his return to the US traveled on the ship Main out of the port of Bremen. November 1907 Age 28 Birth of Edmund H Brandts 1910 1910 Age 30 Lived 303 West Livingston Street in Celina Ohio As a child, this house was fascinating. The rooms were large, and had huge heavy sliding doors in many places, with ornate wooden latices in the corners of the wide doorways. It had two stairways and a secret passageway close to the back stairway. It was a brick, 3 story home, and basically just a big 'box'. On the 1930 census, it was valued at $15,000. In 1910 the census reported it was owned free and clear of mortgage. The house sat on the corner of Livingston Street and Sugar Street above the sidewalk level, and much larger than the other houses on the streets. The public school was across the street and took up the entire block with the playgrounds, etc. A corner grocery store was on the next corner, and it had a delightful candy selection. The home was just a few blocks from the center of town, and about 5 blocks from the Mersman-Brothers Brandts Furniture company. After Lillie's death, the house was sold, and torn down to make a parking lot for the insurance company that also tore down the school building for their new offices. 1911 1911 Age 31 Mercelina Hotel built Celina, OH, USA "
