The family relationship is noted in a l etter of 26th October 1904 from Dr. Friedrich Pauly to Marie Holst in Höö r, in which there is the following: “Concerning Charlotte Opitz’s family r elationship with professor Heinrich Opitz , and I will now give you detail ed information that will interest you much: I have been informed that t he famous Opitz is the author Heinrich Opitz – son of silk merchant Paul O pitz in Altenburg He was born 24th of February 1642 in Altenburg and di ed 24th of January 1712 in Kiel. He has written his own biography. I have read the manuscript in the univer sity library in Kiel. Further, his course of life has been described in de tail in ”Thies”: “Gelehrtengeschichte der Universität in Kiel” (Faculty hi story of the University of Kiel) 1801 page 92. See Diring: Germany’s Learned Theologists. Neustadt 1833 Vol III page 145 Carstens: The theological Faculty in Kiel 1875, page 15 General German Biography Vol 24, Leipzig 1887, page 368 Felde: Analector, Lübeck 1719, page 231 and Molleri Cimbria litt. II pa ge 601 From his own biography, from the book by Thiess and the church books fr om the church in Kiel I have been able to determine as concordant th at he with his wife Elisabeth Dorotha Døge, daughter of the priest in Sele nt apart from three daughters had three sons. The eldest was Josias Heinri ch Opitz b. 18th October 1680 in Kiel and died 1719 as priest in Tønnin The second was Paul FriedrichOpitz born in Kiel 26th March 1684 died 5 th of October 1747 as professor in Middle eastern languages and Theolog y. He was a very learned man. I have at the university library in Kiel re ad his biography, which is written in Latin by his contemporary, profess or Henning. Biography of his life is futher to be found in Molleri Cimbria Litt. I, pa ge 471 Thiess “Gelehrtengeschichte der Universität in Kiel” (Faculty histo ry of the University of Kiel) 1801, Vol I page 278. If you want to seek further information on the professors Opitz, then y ou will find such detailed in Thiess “Gelehrtengeschichte der Universit ät in Kiel” (Faculty history of the University of Kiel) 1801, Vol I. The se sources have been used by all the others Two pictures – copper imprints – of the old Opitz is found in “Schlesvig-H olsteiner Landeshalle” in Kiel. The third son of Heinrich Opitz was Christian Albert baptized in Kiel14 th of May 1686 and died 17th of July 1735 in Kiel. Now I find in the handwritten biography by professor Heenning: That his co lleague pårofessor Paul Friedrich Opitz died a batchelor but not without d escendants. Added was “caoleho nie tamen sine prole” (unmarried but not wi thout children) From the Ægidie church in Lübeck I got the following information: “ the only one registered on 17th June 1719 is: Joachim and Christina Haan en, (married) a foreign soldier, accommodated at tha farm in Kragenstras se (dead) Suscept? )baptise) Adolph Gerdes, Gotlieb Walcke, Anna Kitelhanc he. Friedrich”. So the boy was named Friedrich. Inn 1719 Paul Friedrich was not in Kiel but moved around in the count ry in great misery – may have done military service. The boy – reports pro fessor Henning – was later legitimated and got the name Opitz. He is undou btedly the 16th of June 1719 born Friederich Opitz and my 2nd great-grandf ather. There is no inconsistency in the dates, the 16th is the birthday a nd the 17th the day of baptism. Signed Dr. Friederich Pauly The ranking order is: 1.Silk merchant Poul Opitz in Altenburg. 2.Professor Heinrich Opitz („the Learned“) born 1642 in Altenburg died 17 12 in Kiel 3.Professor Paul Friederich Opitz born in Kiel 1684 died 1747 4.Friederich Opitz born 16th June 1719 in Father: Johan Friederich OPITZ b: Abt 1716 Mother: Sophie Louise SCHÜTZ b: Abt 1734 Marriage 1 Balthasar HOLST b: 23 Oct 1775 in Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein * Married: 7 Feb 1800 in Fischbeck, Adsbøl Sg. - Seine Seite bei Sørensen: "Balthasar Holst (son of Balthasar Holst and Dorothea Elisabeth Bössel) was born 23 Oct 1775 in Flensborg, and died 10 Dec 1835 in Fiskebæk, Gråsten sogn140. He married Charlotte Wilhelmina Sophie Johanna Opitz, daughter of Johan Friederich Opitz and Sophia Lowise Schütz.
